What people forget about the ’90s is that Snapple ran through our veins.

My friend Kane Tsay in the Luna shirt, Chris Colbourn from the band Buffalo Tom, and myself at Rasputin or Leopold’s Records (no longer) in Berkeley. We didn’t know him. We were just nerds and I think Buffalo Tom were either playing an in-store or he showed up to the Verlaines in-store and we took a photo with him.
Photo is by my sister, Yvonne Chen, who confirms this photo was taken in October of 1993.

Cars Get Crushed at 924 Gilman, November 1994.
Rare show where Mac Mann of Antioch Arrow (later of Get Hustle) played keyboards in the band.

Portraits of Past, probably the same show, 924 Gilman. They were from Half Moon Bay and are playing shows again this year.

Trenchmouth at UC Berkeley, Nov 11th, 1994. Probably best known for having Fred Armisen as the drummer. I like that this shows the fashion of the crowd. Gas station jackets, chain wallets, barrettes. Remember being 19 and not knowing what to do with your arms? I briefly had this student job booking these shows on the campus. Brought a lot of weird acts. I was a fan of this band. Damon Locks does solo stuff now and as Black Monument Ensemble.
George Chen is a writer and performer from the San Francisco Bay Area living in Los Angeles. He has worked in independent music since the ‘90s, runs the label Zum, and hosts the variety comedy show Talkies.
