Doc 162: Georgina Hill

In my notes I have written down:
the idea of John Cage walking around to understand there is a room.

And a fragment of a poem from my late father:
its lampshade was blue and green
a vase of blue and green flowers
had been placed on a small glass-topped table
on the opposite wall
and an aquarium of blue and green fish
the fish, small, striped and darting, being equally
bright and refreshing
as the freshly cut flowers

My father was a stained glass artist. This also became the profession of my mother, and my grandfather assisted her for the last years of his life. I often return to this discipline in my practice, even if opaquely or through a gesture, probably because it is what I knew. Enacting the coloured glass light partially brings back those people who formed it before. It is a way to know there is a room.

Georgina Hill is an interdisciplinary artist living in London. She received her MFA from Goldsmiths University and MA in Literature from University College London. Recent exhibitions include madame leniou, Athens, South Parade, London, fluent, Santander, and New Toni, Berlin. She will exhibit at Schleuse in Vienna and Kunstverein Siegen in 2026.
