I’m losing my hearing in my right ear, but it’s OK. There’s a fluctuating sine wave instead. It’s not ringing, it’s more electronic; I kind of like it. It sounds just like the set my old uni friend Matt performed at my band HTRK’s first-ever gig.
Fast forward seventeen years, and on the same morning I get a diagnosis that I have Meniere’s disease, I receive a heartbreaking email from Matt with a diagnosis of his own (cancer, stage IV). What are the chances. Every time the sine waves increase in loudness and change pitch suddenly, I inevitably think warmly of Matt.
Nigel Yang is one-half of the band HTRK. He lives in Melbourne.
