Dear Manon

It’s wonderful to hear about this and thank you for the invitation. I would like to write something as I am feeling there is some sort of elan inside me that needs to get out, and with the icy streets outside I cannot go for a run right now.

I will tell you something eerie, and it relates to Rebekah. Just this morning I randomly noticed this function “unread” in my Facebook Messenger chats. Somehow I had never noticed it before. I took a look and it blew me away, so many messages from the last 15 years, many from artists, musicians and filmmakers I had messaged. One chat I could not work out who it was with, it was from the early 2010s. There was talk of some kind of posting about Philippe Grandrieux, of something about MIFF, of impending travel, of trying to catch up and of happily agreeing to write a letter of recommendation. But I could not see who it was with, my side of the conversation was there and theirs wasn’t, just a space and they were referred to (in a way that now stabs deep into my insides like a raw wound), as ‘Facebook user’. The space turned into a void, when I deduced somehow that it was from Matt, Rebekah’s dear husband, father of their child, who sadly died some years ago. This really haunted me and I had mixed feelings about how it was a banal social media platform that brought to me this spectral exchange, not something more bodily. Anyway, then 30 mins later, as I sat in a cozy Prenzlauer Berg cafe, I saw your message and Rebekah’s name. As I walked home this beautiful song by Jonnine came through my headphones, which felt apt.

Please tell her hello from me, I love her projects and it feels right that you are working together. I will see if I can do anything, like I said I have a lot of thoughts swirling around me right now about things, but I’m not sure they will coalesce into anything clear. I also have much work to do before Rotterdam starts in two weeks.

take care,
Michelle xx
