Last year, I went to an estate sale in Mendocino Village in Northern California. It turned out that the home belonged to a fellow named Garnish who was a cook at a Hog Farm commune set-up near Laytonville, California. Among the amazing things I found were some poetry chapbooks created by Ira Cohen, published by Bardo Matrix Press, the imprint he established with musician Angus MacLise in Kathmandu, Nepal, in the mid-1970s. The books were made from rice paper and super fragile. I also found some snapshots of (I assume) Garnish in Kathmandu, as well as a business card from the Rose Mushroom, a nightclub there on Jhocchen Tole, more widely known as “Freak Street.”
Garnish and his history, up for grabs…
